HISTORY

OUR STORY

William Wood was the name of our Founder’s late grandfather. He was a firefighter in the British Fire Service for 25 years stationed in Newcastle on The Blue Watch. He was a true hero and was one of the first firefighters in his brigade to receive a certificate of bravery for saving 5 small children from a house fire.

His grandson Jonny Garrett created William Wood Watches to honour him and the legacy of firefighters around the world. We are now the largest firefighter inspired watchmaker and are in the top independent British watchmakers.

UPCYCLING

HELMETS & FIRE HOSE

We are proud to have upcycled firefighting history beating through every one of watches. We melt down original British brass firefighter’s helmets, worn by firefighters in the 1920’s, and set them inside our watch crowns and casebacks.

We also upcycle fire hose that has been used in real fires around the world into our luxury watch straps. Each cut of hose has its own unique texture, patina and story to tell. Rather than the fire hose being thrown into landfill, we give it a new life on your wrist.

TECHNICIAL SPECIFICATIONS

CASE

Case Measurements:

The case measures 41mm in diameter, with a 11mm thickness and a lug width of 20mm. The watch wears as a medium to large size on an average wrist due to it having a full width dial and 41mm diameter case.

Lug to Lug:

The lug to lug measurement is 46mm. This is an important measurement from the top of the north lug to the bottom of the south lug, allowing you to know how much real estate the watch will take up on your wrist.

Case Execution:

Our cases are available in either a brushed stainless or rose gold plated finish. The caseback features a limited edition commemorative coin caseback, made from a melted-down 100 year old British brass firefighter’s helmet worn by firefighters in the 1920’s. The coin is sealed with a sapphire crystal glass and the limited edition or authenticity markings are applied through laser engraving.
MOVEMENT

Movement:

Swiss-Made Ronda 762 Quartz Movement with a battery life of up to 10 years. Ronda SA Group timekeeping tolerances for the 762 movement is -10 seconds per month to +20 seconds seconds per movement. This is an elegant two hand display without any second hand.
DIAL

Dial Execution:

The dial has a sunburst effect finish with chauffeured batten shaped indices and roman numerals located at 12. The hands are dauphine shaped and the dial features a spotted seconds track.

Dial Design:

The dial features our iconic vintage firefighter helmet logo applied with microlevel detailing.
GLASS

Glass Execution:

The material used in our glass is sapphire crystal with an applied anti-reflective coating. The glass is completely scratch resistant and finished with a low flush curve. The glass is tinted with a medium blue colour paying tribute to William Wood’s 25 years of service on a shift pattern called The Blue Watch for the Newcastle & Gateshead Fire Brigade.
STRAPS

Strap Measurements:

Our fire hose and fire gear straps fit a wrist size between 5.5 and 9.5 inches. Our leather straps fit a wrist size between 5.5 and 8.5 inches. We do not currently offer straps for lug sizes outside of 20mm.

Strap Execution:

Our full range of watch straps have a 20mm lug width fitting all of our watch collections. Our upcycled fire hose and fire gear straps are finished with a silicon back that is stamped with ‘made from rescued materials’ and ‘William Wood’. All of our straps are fitted with quick-release levers allowing you to add and remove any of our straps without any additional tools required in just a few seconds.
WARRANTY

International Warranty:

We offer a 3 year international warranty on all of our watches giving you complete peace of mind when making your purchase. When completing a warranty repair we will cover the full associated costs including shipping from and to your address. Please be aware that any watch malfunction caused by water damage sits outside of our international warranty. Please always firmly secure your watch crown against the case before use.
