Our Fire Brigades Union Watch is built with a stainless steel diving case offering 100 metres water resistance, double domed sapphire crystal glass, firefighter axe head seconds hand, upcycled fire hose straps and an FBU printed caseback.
William Wood Watches was created by Jonny Garrett in 2016, the Grandson of William Wood (shown right). We have grown to become the world's largest firefighter watchmaker proudly based in Britain. We produce unique firefighter inspired watches made from upcycled firefighting materials in dedication to our founder's late Grandfather, William Wood, a decorated firefighter stationed in the Newcastle & Gateshead Fire Brigade for 25 years.
On 29th June 1966 William Wood and 3 fellow firefighters saved 5 small children aged between 5 and 1 from a severe house fire. They were all awarded with a Certificate of Merit for their courage and bravery which was the first Certificate to ever be awarded in the history of the Newcastle & Gateshead Fire Brigade.
Our Founder Jonny looked up to his grandfather as a charismatic, loving and strong character. He knew that building his lifelong career around him would get him out of bed every morning ready to take on the world. Each watch we make has his late Grandfather's legacy beating through every component and is a tribute to all firefighters past or present who are our everyday heroes.
William Wood is photographed here (closest to the camera on the left) joining the first ever firefighter industrial strike action in Britain in 1977. This was a successful appeal with the Fire Brigades Union achieving a fairer pay for our firefighters.
REAL FIREFIGHTING HISTORY
UPCYCLED 100 YEAR OLD FIREFIGHTER HELMET
Every Fire Brigades Union Watch has an original 1920's British brass firefighter's helmet melted down inside the watch case. We take the original helmet (pictured here) into London's jewellery district and melt it down into our watch crown inserts.
Each watch has over 100 years of real British firefighting history inside. A special keepsake for any firefighter.
FROM FIGHTING FIRES TO ON YOUR WRIST
Upcycled Fire Hose Straps
Fire hose is a beautiful material available in a range of different colours, but sadly once it reaches the end of its life it is usually discarded into landfill. We have strong relationships with fire services around the world who donate their decommissioned fire hose to us to give a new life on someones wrist.
Over the last 7 years we have built up a range of 9 upcycled fire hose straps, each with their own colour, markings and story to tell. Every piece of fire hose that we cut is completely unique to the owner of that strap. These straps have fought fires across the globe, from our Red Fire Hose Strap used across the City of London by the London Fire Brigade, all the way across the Atlantic to our Orange Fire Hose Straps which were used to fight wild land fires by the Sacramento Fire Department in California.
All of our straps have quick-release functionality, meaning that you can add or remove the straps across our full range of Fire Brigades Union Watches without any tools needed, in just a few seconds. By changing the strap colour you can completely transform the look of your watch. For those of you looking for a more subdued colour we also offer an upcycled Fire Gear Strap finished in a desert sand cream, this was made using firefighter jackets and trousers worn in real fires.
For those of you looking for a more traditional look, we offer our Stainless Steel Bracelet on our Fire Brigades Union Watch.
Every Fire Brigades Union Watch comes as standard in our fire engine red Italian leather travel roll inspired by a roll of fire hose. The travel roll carries up to 3 watches, has gold brass closing buttons and our brass firefighter helmet logo.
Or you can choose to upgrade your order to our Fire Alarm Presentation Box (shown left). The watch box is inspired by a fire alarm with a viewing window looking through to your 3 watch cushions. This is the perfect travel companion in your hand luggage and is an wonderful keepsake for a firefighter.
